The term Crowd Economy, is defined as the coalition of individuals, who through their interactions, share and create value in the digital realm. This economic construct is edified by the collective creative impetus of individuals to develop new economic models, amid the ever changing landscape of social networks. The term, coined by Reinaldo Pamponet amidst the inception of the “crowd” movement, encapsulates the collective creation of value in the new economy.

The concept of “crowd” is a reference to any collective movement that aims to add value through sharing resources, as it relates to the development of concepts, ideas, products, services, etc… The most recognized “crowd” movements today are crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, open innovation, collective knowledge, co-creation, cloud labor, civic engagement and collaborative consumption.

These movements gained momentum in 2006, when Jeff Howe published an article on WIRED, introducing the term crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing models presuppose collaborative action of individuals who share ideas, suggestions and feedback. The fundamental premise is that the intelligence of the collective is greater than that of the smartest individual in the group.

These “models” have increasingly become the preferred choice for of small medium and large businesses and organizations, to add value, because they allow for a reduction in costs, they foster greater creativity, they streamline processes, increase productivity and promote inclusion of individuals outside the formal boundaries of the organization, benefiting society as a hole. The inception of the Crowd Economy, engendered the power of the multitudes, who through technological advancement, have changed the way individuals and organizations relate to one another and do business.
