Template:Contains Indic text Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET) is an Institute of Technology with status Deemed University[3] in Longowal, Sangrur district, Punjab, India established by Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Govt. of India. The institute is an autonomous body, fully funded by the Government Of India and controlled by the SLIET society, registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
The main objective of SLIET is to offer flexible, modular, layered, multipoint entry/exit programmes in Engineering & Technology. SLIET aims to promote Self-employment in all programmes by introducing a component of entrepreneurship & providing guidance and counseling services to help students to take up self employment ventures. It offers non-formal programmes in different areas of technology to strengthen the scope of institutional programmes. SLIET provides Technical Education facilities for women, through specially designed courses. The Institute also offers continuing education programmes for working personnel from industries at different levels.[4]
History
SLIET, a deemed university is the premier university institute set up by union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) by an act of parliament after the signing of Punjab accord between then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sant Harchand Singh Longowal in 1985.
Formal shape was given to the idea of a National Level Institute in the Rural Backdrop of the Longowal Village, 1989. Shri Arjun Singh, Then Honorable Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India lays the foundation of the Institute,1991.[5] The institute was formally inaugurated on 20 December 1991 in the memory of the late Harchand Singh Longowal.
The institute commenced Certificate and Diploma programmes in the year 1991 and subsequently the Degree programme in the year 1993. The Post Graduate Courses in four disciplines commenced in the year 2003.[4] All Degree Programmes were Accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education,2003 & Impact Assessment and Review conducted by EdCIL,2004. The institute was previously affiliated to Punjab Technical University.[6] However, it was later accorded the status of Deemed to be University Status during the year 2007-08.
Administration

SLIET organisational structure is distinct from that of the other CFTIs. The Board of Governors of SLIET is under the SLIET Society, and headed by Punjab chief secretary and MHRD officials.[7] The Administration Section of SLIET, Longowal is headed by a Dy. Registrar and function under the overall supervision of the Registrar and Director. Under the director and the registrar are the deans, heads of departments, registrar, and chairman of the hall management committee. The registrar is the chief administrative officer and oversees day-to-day operations. He is the custodian of records, funds, and other properties of the institute. Under the charge of the heads of departments (HOD) are the faculty (full-time professors as well as those of associate and assistant status). The wardens of hostels are placed under the chairman of the hall management committee in the organisation.[8]
SLIET receives its funding from government, nearly Rs. 20 crore per annum. Other sources of funds include student fees and research funding by industry-sponsored projects. [9] SLIET subsidises undergraduate student fees and provide scholarships to all MTech & PhD students to encourage them to pursue higher studies.
The academic policies of SLIET are decided by its senate.[10] It consists of all professors of the institute, and administrative and students. The senate controls and approves the curriculum, courses, examinations and results, and appoints committees to look into specific academic matters. The teaching, training and research activities of the institute are periodically reviewed by the senate to maintain educational standards. And published in form of Book and put on the website for wider circulation and information.[10]
SLIET follows the credit-based system of performance evaluation, with proportional weighting of courses based on their importance. The total marks (usually out of 100) form the basis of grades, with a grade value (out of 10) assigned to a range of marks. For each semester, the students are graded by taking a weighted average from all the courses with their respective credit points. Each semester's evaluation is done independently with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) reflecting the average performance across semesters. The medium of instruction is English.

SLIET is located 19 Kilometers(11mile) east of Sangrur on 451 acres of land provided by Punjab Government.
