The Object Database Management Group (ODMG) was formed to deal with the issue of storing objects persistently in a standardized way.

The commercial environment was such that various object database solutions and object persistence technologies were being developed and marketed. However, they tended to be proprietary. The ODMG had, as one of its goals, the standardization of the interface, query languages, etc.

The group has since been disbanded since Java Data Objects has superseded the need for the group. The group's website can be found at http://www.odmg.org
