Global Network for Rights and Development (commonly known as GNRD) is an International NGO established in June 2008 [3] with the aim to enhance and support both human rights and development by adopting new strategies and policies for real changes. GNRD aims at promoting sustainable human development and combating poverty. GNRD struggle for disadvantaged groups of population, and act as a part of a wider global movement with the goal to eradicate poverty and injustice, and to ensure that all human beings can fully exercise their rights and enjoy their decent life.[4] GNRD's headquarters is located in Stavanger, Norway. GNRD has five regional offices, three active regional high commissions and one Goodwill Ambassador (Mrs. Carole Samaha).[5] [6][7]

Objectives

  • to contribute to the collaboration of all relevant stakeholders, establish a cooperation and partnership between the private and public sector, on the academic, technical and political spheres in promoting and protecting the human rights and development;
  • to boost the proposed broad concept of welfare to ensure people’s opportunity to develop their skills and rights, especially during the democratization transition and citizen participation at human rights protection and promotion;
  • to promote greater equity and social justice;
  • to support and protect the most vulnerable groups and people suffered from humanitarian crises through taking all measures within its power to ensure their well-being and rights to equal opportunities;
  • to contribute to the promotion of the fundamental human rights for the people of the South, including gender equality and social justice;
  • to improve the quality of life of people living in poverty and exclusion;
  • to contribute to the democratic transition of states and people's right to vote through observation missions of elections and referendums;
  • to empower youth by means of diverse programs and trainings, along with supporting the GNRD Youth Groups;
  • to help to alleviate the suffering of individuals trapped in conflicts by providing mediation support when needed in the perspective of a just and lasting peace in accordance with international law and United Nations Standards.

Mission Statement

During this time of globalization and fluidity in communication there is increasing human activity and interchange of worldviews, products, ideas and cultures. It is becoming imperative to ensure the positive utilization of globalization and make it fully inclusive and equitable. GNRD plays the role of a catalyst by extracting the best of today’s international interchange means and by engaging the United Nations and other relevant international institutions for the benefit of the most vulnerable groups and people suffered from crises.[4]

Vision

The vision of GNRD is to create a network that works to benefit from an exchange of the parties’ opinions, thereby developing the rights recognised in international constitutions. Additionally, we intend to strengthen the role of civil society and the private sector in making solutions process, and give them the chance to act internationally in order to establish communication between countries, which will allow to learn from each other’s experience. Such contribution to a better notion of rights and an improved understanding of them will let us achieve mutual respect, which in turn will strengthen the development of economic, civil and political rights.

GNRD aim to contribute significantly to the global movement for social justice.[8]

President

GNRD President is Dr. Loai Deeb (لؤي ديب).[9]

Regional Offices

GNRD has five regional offices: Amman, Jordan; Brussels, Belgium; Dubai, UAE; Geneva, Switzerland; and Valencia, Spain.

Cooperation with African Union

GNRD signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the African Union Commission in 13 December 2014.[10]

"According to the signed MoU, the Commission and GNRD will cooperate to explore opportunities for cooperation and non-exclusive partnership in the following areas:

  • Fostering Civil Society participation in policy development;
  • Promotion of Good Governance democracy, human rights and development;
  • Engaging the Diaspora in development;
  • Socio-economic growth and development in Africa;
  • Information generation and dissemination on issues related to human rights, continental integration, economic development and social justice;
  • Support for peace-making and peace-building efforts in Africa;
  • Advocacy efforts and support for humanitarian relief and emergencies."[11]

Activities at the EU Parliament

GNRD is registered at the EU Transparency Register[12]. Thus, GNRD holds events and do lobbying within the EU Parliament.[13][14] like GNRD “Children in Conflict Zones” Conference at the Eu Parliament [15]

Observation Missions

GNRD has solid experience in observation of the elections and referendums. By such activity GNRD aims to support the democratic transition of counties, promote people's right to vote and contribute to the transparency of the voting process.

GNRD was officially accredited to monitor the following elections and referendums as international observer, and successfully held the related missions:

  • South Sudanese Independence Referendum of 14-15 January 2011;
  • Jordanian Parliamentary Elections of 23 January 2013;
  • Egyptian Constitutional Referendum of 14-15 January 2014;[20]
  • Algerian Presidential Elections of 17 May 2014;[21]
  • Egyptian Presidential Elections of 26-27 May 2014.[22]
