Information Visualization is the scientific area concerning the organization and visualization of abstract data.

The term "information visualization" has been created at Xerox Parc in the 80s by a group of pioneers in this field.

The HCILab of University of Maryland did a lot of researches around it and they produced, in the early 90s, a lot of interesting projects.

Among them: FilmFinder, Piccolo, Jazz, TreeMaps, HomeFinder.
