CodeChef
CodeChef is a non-profit educational initiative of Directi.[1][2][3] It's a global Competitive programming platform which supports over 35 programming languages, has a large community of programmers that helps students and professionals test and improve their coding skills.[3] Its objective is to provide a platform for practice, competition and improvement for student, professional software developers.[4] Apart from this it also aims to reach out to school students while young and create a culture of programming in the country.[4][5]
Initiatives
To foster programming talent CodeChef has started initiatives such as Go for Gold initiative, CodeChef for Schools program, Monthly long contests.
Go for Gold initiative: Go for Gold is a non-profit program launched in 2010 to enable Indian teams to excel at the world finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, the most competitive programming challenge in the world.[6] It's an extensive plan designed to make Indian programmers the best in the world. To this end, Directi has pledged a yearly support of 70,000US$ to nurture Indian talent. The Go for Gold cup will be awarded to the Indian team that finishes at a higher rank than any other Indian team has reached in the history of ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals.[7][8][9]
CodeChef for Schools program: CodeChef for Schools is aimed at fostering developers at grass root level to create a self-sustaining community of technology developers. The initiative hopes to enable Indian students to excel at the International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI), one of the five academic Olympiads for high-school students worldwide.[5] CodeChef for Schools program has kick started by tapping school children from class 8 onwards and has pledged a yearly support of US$20,000 for this initiative.[10][11]
Monthly contests: CodeChef hosts a 10 day long contest and a couple of short contests every month [12][13][14] (one International Olympiad in Informatics styled and other ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest styled), and provides a contest hosting platform to educational institutions for free. The top two winners of the long contest win cash prizes while the top 10 global get a tee-shirt. Top notch universities/institutions such as IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur etc host their coding contests on CodeChef.[15][16]
History
It was in the year 2009 -- Directi, the leading internet products company, launched CodeChef with a vision to provide a platform for practice, competition and improvement for student and professional software developers across India.[17]
In July 2010, Directi along with CodeChef started ‘Go for Gold’ intiative to enable an Indian team to excel at the world finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC).[7][8][9][6]
In July 2013, CodeChef along with Directi has launched CodeChef for Schools program, which is aimed at fostering developers at grass root level to create a self-sustaining community of technology developers. The initiative hopes to enable Indian students to excel at the International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI), one of the five academic Olympiads for high-school students worldwide. The competition requires contestants to show basic IT skills such as as problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming, and testing.[5] CodeChef for Schools program has kick started by tapping school children from class 8 onwards and has pledged an yearly support of $20,000 for this initiative.[18][19]
