Smart terminal
In payments, a smart terminal is a piece of mobile hardware, used as a payment terminal, which supports various electronic methods such as magnetic stripes, NFC, EMV, QR Codes, digital currencies, beacon, and more. Legacy payment terminals have only supported limited payment options such as cash, credit card, and debit card payments. Smart terminals allow for significantly increased functionality in merchant acceptance of virtually unlimited forms of electronic payment.
Poynt
Poynt is the first iteration of smart terminals. The Poynt smart terminal runs on a native operating system (PoyntOS), features wifi and 3G connectivity, and supports various payment methods such as magnetic stripe, NFC, EMV, QR Codes, Bluetooth, and credit card imprints.[1]
In computing, smart terminal can mean either:
- A thin client with local data processing capacity
- A computer terminal that has capabilities for cursor positioning, or other display formatting capabilities beyond a text-mode teleprinter
- A block-oriented terminal which typically offloads form or panel editing from a mainframe computer
