International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology
The International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology is a publication which has been described as a predatory open access journal[1][2] (a publication which has some of the surface attributes of a benign open access journal but is actually an exploitive and deceptive corruption of that model, operating as a disreputable vanity press with little scholarly value).[3]
"Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List"
Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list.
— Mazières and Kohler, "Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List" (excerpt)[4]
In 2005, David Mazières (an associate professor of computer science at Stanford University)[5] and Eddie Kohler (an associate professor of computer science at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences[6] submitted a paper titled "Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List" and submitted it to WMSCI 2005 (the 9th World Multiconference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics), a conference then notorious for its spamming and lax standards for paper acceptance, in protest of same.[7] The paper consisted essentially only of the the sentence "Get me off your fucking mailing list" repeated many times.[4]
In 2014, Peter Vamplew, an associate professor at the Federation University Australia School of Engineering and Information Technology,[8] after receiving a spam email from the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology, forwarded Mazières' and Kohler's old paper as an acerbic response.[9] To Vamplew's surprise, the paper was reviewed, rated as "excellent" by the journal's peer-review process[9][10] and accepted for publication.[9][11][12] The paper was not actually published as Vamplew declined to provide the required $150 publication fee.[9]
Acceptance of a paper consisting entirely of repetitions of "Get me off your fucking mailing list" has led some commenters to question the legitimacy of the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology as an authentic scholarly undertaking and ponder whether the enterprise is more interested in collecting publication fees than in contributing first-rate peer-reviewed articles to the advancement of computer science.[1][2][9]

Predatory open-access publishers are those that unprofessionally exploit the gold open-access model for their own profit. That is to say, they operate as scholarly vanity presses and publish articles in exchange for the author fee. They are characterized by various level of deception and lack of transparency in their operations. For example, some publishers may misrepresent their location, stating New York instead of Nigeria, or they may claim a stringent peer-review where none really exists.
