Michael "Venom" Page (Born 7 April 1987) is an English kickboxer, Karateka and mixed martial artist, fighting in the welterweight division.[2] He is recognised in the MMA community for his unorthodox fighting style, which he has been using since he was competing in freestyle kickboxing.
Kickboxing
His father is Curtis Page, a Lau Gar Kung Fu Master, and his brothers are also Kickboxing World Champions.
Michael began training in martial arts at the age of 3 in Lau Gar Kung Fu,[3] and competed at his first Karate tournament at the age of 5. Because almost everyone in his family, including his dad Curtis Page, were involved in martial arts he felt he should follow suit.[4]
Page has won ten world championships in freestyle kickboxing[5] – his first was at a tournament in Orlando, Florida when he was only 12 years old[6] – as well as being, in his own words, crowned British champion a "silly amount of times."[7] One notable world title win was at the W.A.K.O. World Championships 2007 (Coimbra), where at the men's Semi-Contact division, he won the gold medal after defeating Ireland's Dave Heffernan by decision.[8] He also competed at the World Combat Games 2010 in the 89 kg semi-contact division, where he won silver, just losing out on gold to the division winner Kristian Jaroszkievicz.[9]
He coaches and trains others in kickboxing when he isn't competing, primarily as an instructor at the Great Britain Mixed Martial Arts Academies in Leatherhead and Cobham[10][11][12]
Mixed martial arts career
Background
Page began training with the London Shootfighters in 2011,[13] a camp which boasts recognizable names such as James Thompson, Mostapha Al Turk, Marius Zaromskis, Karlos Vemola, Zelg Galesic, John Hathaway and Lee Murray.[14]
UCMMA
Page made his MMA debut at UCMMA 26 against Ben Dishman, which he won via TKO from a tornado kick.[15] This fight had the whole MMA community talking about Page's striking skills, going as far as calling him 'The UK's Anderson Silva'.[16][17][18]
Page next faced Miguel Bernard at UCMMA 27 in a 175 lbs catchweight bout, winning once again in impressive fashion. After both men spent over a minute using their unorthodox striking styles, Page slipped and fell onto his back. Bernard followed him to the ground, prompting Page to go for a triangle choke. After managing to pull his head out, Bernard found himself in an armbar, forcing him to tap out at 1:43 into the first round.[19]
Page then went back to his roots as a kickboxer when he fought in a UK-1 bout at UCMMA 29. Page was supposed to challenge UCMMA UK-1 Welterweight champion Peter Irving for the belt.[20] However, Irving had to pull out of the fight due to injury and was replaced by Jefferson George after another three opponents dropped out after also being injured.[21] Page won the fight after knocking out George from a two punch combination in the second round.
Super Fight League
On 23 June, the Super Fight League announced that they had signed Michael Page, along with Jeff Monson, Satoshi Ishii, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.[22][23][24]
Page made his debut for the Super Fight League at SFL 7 against Haitham Tantawy, winning by doctor stoppage due to cuts.[25]
Page returned to Super Fight League in April 2013 to face Ramdan Mohamed as the main event at SFL 15 in India and won via submission.[26]
Bellator MMA
After winning his UK-1 fight against Jefferson George, he announced post-fight that he has signed a contract with Bellator MMA, and that he will fight for both Bellator and the Super Fight League under their respective contracts.[27][28]
Page was expected to make his debut for the promotion at Bellator 82,[29] however he pulled out of the bout citing surgery for an old jaw injury.[30][31]
Page eventually made his debut on 21 March 2013 at Bellator 93.[32] He faced Ryan Sanders and won the fight via knock out at just ten seconds into the first round.[33]
Page was scheduled to fight at Bellator 102 but had to withdraw due to a knee injury.[34][35] A later appearance slated for Bellator 109 was also cancelled because of that same injury.[36]
Page defeated Ricky Rainey via KO (punch) in the first round at Bellator 120 on 17 May 2014.[37]
Page defeated Nah-Shon Burrell via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at Bellator 128 on 10 October 2014.[38]
Trivia
Page listed his favorite fight, he witnessed in person, to be a "freestyle kickboxing bout - Simon Lewis vs Matthew Winsper."
His father is his biggest influence towards his combat sports career.
He has fought Glory fighter Raymond Daniels in numerous Karate point fighting tournaments.[39]
He is currently sponsored by Grips Athletics and Multipower Sportsfood.[40][41]
Page is also an avid salsa dancer.[42][43]
