Wikipedia:Voice intro project

The Voice intro project makes and solicits audio recordings in which Wikipedia subjects speak their name and introduce themselves, in response to a blog post, "Requesting open-licensed, open-format recordings of the voices of Wikipedia subjects for Wikimedia Commons", by Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing). We do this so that we know what notable people sound like; and how they pronounce their own names.

How to record

People are asked to record a short sample of their voice so we know how they prenounce their own name and what they sound like. The following script can be used:

Hello, my name is [name]. I was born in [place] and I have been [job or position] since [year]

Try to find a quiet place when recording. Recordings can be done using a smartphone, the Audacity software on a computer, or online from Vocaroo.com. When you're recording using Vocaroo, please see instructions on how to mail in content.

Before submition to Wikimedia Commons, the media database of the Wimedia project, audio files need be converted to either FLAC or Ogg Vorbis. This can be done using Audacity or this online tool.

On Wikimedia Commons, the relevant project category can be added.

Please, don't mention Wikipedia in your recording unless it's related to your job or position.

• Use en:Template:Listen (copyable example below)
  • Embed that in an infobox if possible. See an example of embedding
