Software Virtualization Solution (SVS) provides for faster, simpler and more manageable deployment of desktop applications.
SVS is a revolutionary approach to software management. By placing applications and data into managed units called Virtual Software Packages, Software Virtualization Solution allows you to instantly activate, deactivate or reset applications and to completely avoid conflicts between applications, without altering the base Windows installation.
SVS includes a complete, packaged solution based on Altiris Notification Server, which has significant advantages in the management and administration of Virtual Software Packages. However, SVS is designed to work independently of the Altiris framework. API, WMI and command line interfaces are provided. Therefore, SVS client-side operations can be managed via Altiris Deployment Solution, Microsoft SMS, LANDesk, Novell ZENworks or any other desktop management product. SVS extends what you already have, no matter what you have.
System Virtualization vs. Software Virtualization:
System Virtualization: Dividing a single system, capable of running a single instance of an operating system, into multiple smaller systems, each capable of running its own copy of an operating system.
Software Virtualization: Dividing the file system and registry, to allow applications and data to be deployed and used without altering the baseline configuration of the host operating system.
How SVS Solves Problems:
Provisioning and deprovisioning applications is disruptive to users and time consuming. With SVS you can:
=Deploy without modifying Windows =Deploy without interfering with pre-existing applications =Instant on/instant off – Applications are made available or unavailable in a fraction of a second =No system rights required by user for “install” =No reboot required on client =Required services spin up when application is activated =Virtual Software Packages (VSP’s) created with simple capture tool (SVS Admin) or automatically convert packages to VSP’s with Wise Package Studio. =VSP’s are portable between machines and Windows versions (variables) =VSP’s support multiple (non-concurrent) users =Negligible system overhead (< 200K filter driver) =The virtualization technology is invisible to the user, to the applications, and to the operating system =Applications and data are visible system-wide and execute normally =Integrated with Inventory Solution, Software Portal, Wise Package Studio =Pre-built Web Reports and Notification Policies
The Filter Driver
=Sees all file system and registry activity =Passes through regular file system requests =When virtualized data is accessed, the request is redirected to an isolated, obscured section of the file system and/or registry =Files and registry keys appear to be in the correct location, but… not really (virtual) =Consumes < 1MB kernel memory, even under heavy load
Future of SVS
=Virtualization of OS patches =Support for server-based applications =Support for multiple concurrent users (terminal servers) =Ability to patch and upgrade VSP’s =Ability to manage package dependencies =Package merge =Advanced VSP management features to be delivered in Wise Package Studio =“Total State Management” or “Virtual Lockdown” with Altiris Protect and SVS
