Talk:Central processing unit/Processor article history
A processor is a sub-system of an information processing system which processes or changes information received from an object in some manner prior to transmitting it to an observer.
Similarly, the processor sub-system of a data processing system processes received information after it has been encoded into data by the input sub-system. This data is then processed by the processing sub-system before being sent as data to the output sub-system where it is decoded back into information.
The two major types of digital processors are the central processing unit (CPU) and the digital signal processor (DSP).
There are also analogue audio processors, often used in studios and radio stations.
There is also a kitchen appliance called a food processor.
A person at a processing facility (such as for sorting mail) may also be called a processor.
