Definition of the Zone

The Arkaroola Protection Zone describes a geographical area covering almost all of the coincident Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and pastoral lease, as well as part of the Mount Freeling pastoral lease.

The Arkaroola Protection Zone exists as a plan lodged with the South Australian General Registry Office in Adelaide as GRO plan number 32/2011.[1] The Arkaroola Protection Zone is referenced by the Arkaroola Protection Act (2012).[1]

History

Following the public outcry that resulted from Marathon Resources' misconduct in the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary—including the illegal dumping of many tonnes of exploration waste in shallow pits, the South Australian government promised to introduce legislation to ban all mining activities in the sanctuary, with the premier stating that "we have decided to give the region unprecedented protection".[2]

This protection was provided Any and all mining within in an area roughly coincident with the Arkaroola pastoral lease on which the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is located, is now prohibited. This area includes Mount Gee and the Mount Painter inlier. This protection is provided by the South Australian Arkaroola Protection Act (2012),[1]
