Category is currently over 700 articles, and that is before sorting alot of the recently created 2012 Olympian articles into it. Propose the following categories based on existing templates that have passed 60.

Alpine skiing

A proposal for sports categories that has nothing to do with London 2012! Alpine skiing stubs is looking a bit large (over 600) we already have templates for Italy, US and Canada but no categories, given that each template appears to have over 100 transclusions, I think it is about time for

More field hockey bio stubs

Category:European mosque stubs was created out of order. I'm guessing there may be enough for a category. Since I doubt we're ready for individual country templates at this time, propose a continent-level template here. Dawynn (talk) 09:41, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Upmerged templates would probably be ok for Azerbaijan, Albania, Turkey and the UK. I think that based on current tagging and small untagged articles the category should take around 150. SeveroTC 10:10, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

For articles about historic shipwrecks (as opposed to articles about ships that happened to be wrecked). I don't know exactly how many articles this template would apply to, but I run into them frequently. Comics company stubs

In sorting the stub-class comics articles into Category:Comics stubs, I see the need for additional stub types and sub-categories, before the parent category gets too big. There are currently almost 700 articles with the generic {{Comics-stub}}, and I am only through the C's alphabetically in tagging stub-class comics articles. I will add more here, as other necessary stub types become apparent, but I propose the creation of:

Telephony stubs

I propose creation of {{telephony-stub}} and Category:Telephony stubs, the latter being a subcat of Category:Telecommunications stubs and Category:Telephony. The telecomm stubs category is much too large and needs to be split up. According to CatScan, there are about 200 telecomm stubs that could be put into the new stub category instead.[1] Category:Telephone number stubs should be made a subcategory of the new stub category; its template would be unchanged.--Srleffler (talk) 05:23, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure the distinction between telephony and telecommunications is clear enough to make this more than an arbitrary distinction to split a large category in half - looking at the telephony category tree, it seems very broad (and closer to 300 stubs when you add more depth to the search). But if we can't find a better option, maybe it'll have to do. --Qetuth (talk) 12:57, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Telecommunications is a much broader category than telephony. Telecommunications includes broadcasting, particularly radio and television. It also includes data transmission, including the Internet and wireless networking. None of these things is "telephony". Splitting off telephony will take a big chunk out of the overpopulated telecomm stub category, but it is also a sensible way to divide the topic.--Srleffler (talk) 03:30, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Most of these things are already split off: we have Category:Broadcasting stubs, Category:Television stubs, Category:Radio stubs, Category:Internet stubs, Category:Wireless stubs as subcats already. But point taken... --Qetuth (talk) 11:39, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, although note that the TV and radio stub categories you listed are not going to be the most appropriate sub-stubs for most things that might otherwise be in Category:Telecommunications stubs. The correct stubs would more often be {{tv-tech-stub}} and {{radio-comm-stub}}. Given that those stubs already exist, a stub for telephony seemed like the next most reasonable choice for subdividing the content. I don't see any other good options for new sub-stubs.--Srleffler (talk) 20:05, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

This proposal has been sitting for a while. I still think this makes sense, and I think I have adequately answered the concerns raised above. Could someone close this? Is it possible to have a bot change the stub tags: any page with {{Telecomm-stub}} that is in Category:Telephony should be changed to {{telephony-stub}}. That seems like a better task for a bot than a human editor. This change provides a sensible division of content, and breaks up the overly-large telecomm-stub category.--Srleffler (talk) 02:31, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

We already have Category:American long-distance runner stubs without a higher level generic category, or even template! Propose the template and category for gathering athletes from other countries. Given that we already have an American category, the generic category is needed for proper structure. I would think we should be able to fill it from the perm Category:Long-distance runners. The history behind the American category is that it was passed 800 and the only split that seemed reasonable was by event, so we created templates for each event and split out those events that passed 60. Though I wouldn't !Vote against this, some reasons why I would be against this split, It would almost certainly lead to oversized category, It would lead to some athletes being categorized in here but not under there country and others vice-versa leading to confusion. Further split of language stubs

Some of the subcats of Category:Language stubs have grown a little large. Propose the following sub-families:

Note that most of the top level families have initialised stub prefixes (eg {{nc-lang-stub}} for Niger-Congo stubs), but the existing subdivisions all then go to full names (eg {{WestChadic-lang-stub}}). As the four american families listed are all top level families, perhaps initials would be better for those? (mj- annd om- are obvious, not sure about the others) --Qetuth (talk) 07:54, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Mines and mining

The result of the debate was do not create.
I'd like to see a Mines and mining stub. There doesn't seem to be any existing stub category remotely applicable. The closest are geology and engineering, which really aren't that close. There is a WikiProject Mining. How about {{Mines-mining-stub}}? --Bejnar (talk) 08:31, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

I see that Template:Mining-stub has been around since January 2008. Funny that that stub type is not listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types which supposedly lists all stub types. Category:Stub categories is useless for looking up a stub, although I see, in retrospect, that Template:Mining-stub is listed under Category:Geology stubs and Category:Industry stubs. I do think that my proposal is a better title, but the {{Mining-stub}} should work well. So how does a stub from January 2008 get listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types? Should Mining have a co-equal status with Agriculture under Commerce? --Bejnar (talk) 22:33, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
A stub from Jan 2008 gets listed at Stub types by listing it at stub types - assuming it's well formed and has been vetted. Unfortunately, many are missing, because it's an easy thing to overlook. A quick check of what links here shows it was initially brought to deletions as unproposed, the result was that it was a useful stub idea and to fix its format, categories and scope. The category was later approved through the propoer process. I think the question then becomes do we need a second mining stub yet. I don't think so, unless there is the expectation that Category:Mining stubs will grow rapidly soon due to WikiProject Mining working on creating missing articles en masse or something similar...300 is not a huge number for a stub category. --Qetuth (talk) 02:41, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Added both Mining and Forestry to the stub types list under industry, which is in the technology subpage. However, I think Bejnar had a point - should Category:Industry stubs be under the commerce tree and listed there in the stub types? It was listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Templates to vet/L-R. Basically, adding the missing templates is a manual process. A contributor should attempt to verify that the template was approved at some time, or post it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries. Once it has been approved, you may add it in an appropriate place, along with any other needed structural additions to establish hierarchy. Dawynn (talk) 22:42, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
