Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. is a Chicago-based telecommunications service company providing wireless, local- and long-distance telephone, broadband and video services to approximately 7 million customers in 36 states[2] through its business units TDS Telecom and U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM).
The company began as a rural phone company in Wisconsin in 1969. In 1983 it founded U.S. Cellular as a subsidiary.[3]

Restatement
On April 19, 2004, Telephone and Data Systems Inc. would restate financial results for fiscal 2002 and 2003 to reflect a reclassification of goodwill and licenses for its wireless operations.[6] On December 22, 2004, TDS said it would restate cash flows for the nine months ended Sept. 30 to reflect a reclassification of cash flows from financing activities and operating activities.[7] On November 10, 2005, Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. announced that it would restate its financial results for the first and second quarters of 2005, and for the years ended Dec. 31, 2000 - 2004, and for each of the quarters of 2004 and 2003. As a result, previously issued financial statements for these periods should not be relied on.[8]
