Jack Pirtle's Chicken
"Jack Pirtle's Chicken" is a restaurant franchise in Memphis, which was first opened in 1957. Jack Pirtle was name 'Best Chicken' by Memphis Flyer two years in a row.
History
Jack Pirtle's Chicken began when the man Jack Pirtle opened the first drive thru Jack Pirtle on Bellevue in South Memphis in 1957. A few months earlier, he struck a deal with Colonel Sanders and opened the Jefferson Cafe. There he served chicken three days a week. Jack Pirtle served so much chicken, he decided to built a restaurant. The first Jack Pirtle opened as Jack Pirtle Featuring Tender and Tasty Kentucky Fried Chicken. The intercom, where customers can place their order, was the first of any drive thru restaurant in Memphis. In 1961, the second Jack Pirtle opened on Summer Avenue. The next year, the Park and Highland Jack Avenues Jack Pirtle opened. When Jack Pirtle severed ties with Colonel Sanders in 1964, he opened the Poplar and Cleveland location in Midtown. Then he added the cheeseburger, the steak sandwich and the foot long hot dog. Also, he created the trademark yellow and blue colors. In 1979, Jack Pirtle's son Cordell took over and now Jack Pirtle has ten locations including the first dine-in on Mt Moriah.
