![]() | This page in a nutshell: Articles that meet Wikipedia’s general notability requirements and notability requirements for events should not be deleted because they received news coverage |
Every day, millions of non-notable events occur. Something happens, is resolved and ultimately has no impact on anyone who isn’t a direct participant. Articles should not be created to cover these events because they are not notable enough to warrant the article.
Many of these non-notable events will receive coverage by the international media for a variety of reasons. The coverage will usually last for a day or two, before being completely forgotten. Unfortunately, this creates an ample amount of sources to produce an article with. It is for this reason that WP:NOTNEWS exists: to prevent otherwise non-notable events that receive a single day of coverage from getting articles.
In many AfDs, users nominate articles for deletion under the mistaken assumption that media coverage decreases notability. This is not the case. Media coverage can only increase notability, WP:NOTNEWS just states that a single day of coverage does not create enough notability to warrant an article. When nominating articles that have received significant news coverage, it is important to consider whether the articles meets notability requires. If it does, the article should not be deleted. If the article fails the requirements, a deletion or merge is an appropriate response. The following is a list of article subjects that are often nominated for deletion under WP:NOTNEWS, despite the fact that they often meet notability requirements:
==Current Events==
WP:NOTNEWS does not prohibit the creation of articles about current events. If an event receives months of in-depth news coverage, has some demonstrable effect (such as political controversy, troop movements, economic changes, ect.) and otherwise meets Wikipedia's criteria for events, then it is almost certainly notable enough to warrant an article. Before nominating current events article for deletion on the grounds of WP:NOTNEWS, please remember that most notable events were in fact news at one point in time.
Articles that read like news reports
Many articles about current events will give a blow-by-blow account about every single update to an ongoing event. Articles should not in fact do this, but it is nearly impossible to prevent this from occurring (short of locking a page) due to the Wikipedia model. Fortunately, this is a problem that can be fixed by editing, so deletion is not necessary. Generally, it is best to wait until an event is resolved and interest in it dies down, at which point a small group of editors should go back and edit the event’s article so it is more encyclopedic.
For example, an article about an upcoming election is likely going to be edited by to include information about every hand shaken, every baby kissed and every misspoken word. The article should not be deleted because of this constant barrage of updates. Rather, editors should wait until a few weeks after the election when interest about it has died down. At this point, the editors should edit the article so it covers the important information about the election in an encyclopedic manner.
Otherwise notable articles that go through a WP:NOTNEWS Event
Many notable people, places and organizations become involved in an event that receives a day or two of media coverage. This event is not enough to establish notability per WP:NOTNEWS. However, if the article’s subject is already notable, then the article should not be deleted as its notability was not decreased by the news coverage.
This section also applies to articles about subjects that are created when the subject is receiving its coverage for a WP:NOTNEWS event. So long as the subject is actually notable, it does not matter when its article is created.
