Problematic Internt Use is an addictive behaviour, either excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges, or behaviours regarding computer use and internet access that lead to impairment or distress.

For PIU the current hypothesis that individuals’ preference for online, rather than face-to-face, social interaction plays an important role in the development of negative consequences associated with problematic Internet use.

Looking at PIU, the overuse of the Internet leads to adverse health and life consequences (Use table), looking at the PIU theoretical framework on the side, this indicates the the many consequences.

A study conducted by Scott E. Caplan, suggests that lonely an depressed individuals may develop a preference for online social interaction, which may then lead to negative outcomes with their Internet use.

Stated by Caplan, the term problematic refers to usage reflecting a specific cycle of innate dysfunction leading to Internet use that in turn exacerbates the dysfunction.

From the excessive use of the Internet, specifically for the younger audience, problems can accure such as:

• Suffer from depression and/or anxiety

• Have been diagnosed with an ADHD-type illness

• Have been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome

• Lack social support and have few friends in the ‘real’ world

• Are bored or stressed (using games as an escape from problems)

• Have a physical disability or otherwise impaired mobility

• Face a breakdown in family or social bonds
