Looking at PIU, the overuse of the Internet leads to adverse health and life consequences (Use table), look at the table on the side which shows the the many consequences. [1]

For problematic internt use the current hypothesis that individuals’ preference for online, rather than face-to-face, social interaction plays an important role in the development of negative consequences associated with problematic Internet use. A study conducted by Scott E. Caplan, suggests that lonely an depressed individuals may develop a preference for online social interaction, which may then lead to negative outcomes with their Internet use. Stated by Caplan, the term problematic refers to usage reflecting a specific cycle of innate dysfunction leading to Internet use that in turn exacerbates the dysfunction.[2]
