2go Messenger is a free mobile instant messaging application developed by 2go Interactive Ltd. in Johannesburg, South Africa. 2go Messenger supports over 1,500 devices, including feature phones, Android and BlackBerry OS devices.[1] 2go Messenger boasts over 10 million active monthly users, 9 million of which hail from Nigeria, the company's stronghold.[2]

History

Although currently based in Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2go Messenger originated in Johannesburg. The company was founded in 2007 by four University of Witwatersrand students as a communication tool for university students due to the high cost of SMS. In 2008, two of the founders left, leaving Alan Wolff and Ashley Peters behind. The duo decided to move away from the students-only model, targetting the mass market.[3]

2go Messenger continued to grow, despite any external investment, mainly thanks to its focus on feature phones, devices that currently rule the African moobile market. As of January 2013, the companyt Over 6 billion messages are sent across the service each month, mainly in paid-for chat rooms.[4]

In June 2013, 2go Messenger for Android was released, claiming 1 million downloads within its first month on the Google Play Store.[5]

Features

2go Messenger was initially launched as a student-only IM client, but quickly expanded to cover the broad market. Supported devices requires Java and internet connectivity via CSD, GPRS, 3G or wifi to operate.

Originally intended for feature phones only, versions for Android and BlackBerry OS powered devices have also been released[6]

2go Messenger offers one-on-one chat services in addition to paid-for chat room facilities which makes use of the platform's GoCredits currency.[7]
