Area code 856

This is a newer area code, created in 1997 by a split of the 609 area code. It now covers western South Jersey, and 609 covers the eastern part. It is assigned to both landlines and cell phones, but many people living in this area code have a cell phone under 609. Usually, when purchasing a new cell phone, customers are given a choice.
