Name

Interesting that papers of the time call it the "Computer Science Research Network" but the "research" seems to have been dropped. W Nowicki (talk) 23:23, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Initial CSNet User Sites

I believe the sentence about user sites on board in 1981 is wrong. As soon as we had funding (and possibly a bit sooner), I brought up the University of Pennsylvania, just down the road from UDel. I believe the second site was Ford Aerospace on the West Coast. Unfortunately I can't find a citation that lists the actual early sites. Connection speed

What was the speed of the CSNET backbone? Did that change over time? -- Beland (talk) 18:09, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

CSNET map of sites here - http://www.articlesdepot.info/kb_upload/Image/www-il_20th/articlesdepot-info_20th-il-www_CNET-il.jpg
Phonenet sites were a dialup protocol for doing email over POTS, ie. 2400, 4800, or 9600 bps (later 14.4 and 33kps), some dedicated analog, some dial-on-demand
X.25 sites were generally 14 to 56kbps, generally connected back to BBN cambridge. There may not have been a backbone with dedicated circuits until CSNET established the CSNET West Coast Cluster with a 256kb fractional T1 from BBN Cambridge to SDSC San Diego - ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/netinfo/NSFNET/imr/IMR90-09.TXT --TcomptonMA 18:24, 3 January 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by TcomptonMA (talkcontribs)
