ASLIB, the Association for Information Management was founded in England in 1924 as Association of Special Libraries and Information Bureaux.

ASLIB is a membership association for people who manage information and knowledge in organizations, who are not necessarily librarians. They provide training, advice and networking for members, with a key focus on data protection, intellectual property and information governance issues.

ASLIB was acquired by Emerald Group Publishing in 2010.

In 2013, ASLIB will hold their inaugural conference at The British Library, London. AKISS - ASLIB Knowledge and Information Strategy Summit will be held on the 5-6 December.

ASLIB publish two magazines:

For many years ASLIB published the ASLIB Directory of Information Sources in the United Kingdom. 16.udgave. London: Routledge, 2010. (First published in 1928). This is now published by Routledge.

ASLIB Training

In 2013, ASLIB celebrated 70 years as an Information Skills provider. Training is provided in the following ways:

  • Open workshops
  • On-site workshops
  • One-to-one training
  • Pathways to Information Leadershipis an online Professional Development programme of short master’s-level courses for new and aspiring information leaders.

Pathways to Information Leadership allows you to choose what and when you study, whilst providing the support and resources of a formal university qualification.

Incorporating the latest thinking, research and best practice on core aspects of information management and leadership, the programme offers over 30 courses from six key subject areas:

• Digital Information Collection Development and Curation • Digital Information Governance, Rights and Ethics • Digital Information Structures • Information Asset Protection and Assurance • Resources and Risks in the Digital Environment • Strategic Information Leadership.

Communities of Practice

ASLIB members can also join Communities of Practice. One of the most important aspects of group membership is the invaluable network of contacts formed between members which creates an effective information resource as well as providing business and career opportunities. The ASLIB Special Interest Group network provides invaluable support to members in the pursuit of their professional duties within their organizations, large and small.

The Translation and Technology Group hold an annual conference in London called 'Translating and the Computer Conference'. The conference is a meeting point for translators, researchers and students in the translation and localization field.
