Arijit Singh (born 25 April 1987)[1] is an Indian playback singer whose songs have been featured in recent Bollywood movies. He was one of top six contestants in reality-singing series, Fame Gurukul in 2005 and became an assistant to music director Pritam.[2]
Career
Singer Arijit Singh, who has climbed the popularity charts after rendering his soulful voice to Aashiqui 2’s Tum Hi Ho, talks about his humble beginnings.
He’s currently riding high on the success of Aashiqui 2’s Tum Hi Ho and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s Dilliwali Girlfriend, but singer and music producer Arijit Singh started his musical journey way back in 2005, with a reality show, Fame Gurukul.
“It was a crazy experience. Back then, music reality shows like Indian Idol had become very popular. So I thought it would be a good idea to try my luck.” Arijit says.
However, fame doesn’t come that easy and Arijit had to go through a number of auditions to make it to the show. “I slept through my auditions because there were so many rounds and I used to get very tired after a while. So, I often dozed off,” admits Arijit candidly.Though the 26-year-old singer has come a long way since then, Arijit says a stint at the reality show did give him a contract with a music label, but it took him a long time to find a solid foothold in the industry.
“Like all participants, I also thought that now that I’m slightly known, I’ll get to sing playback songs. However, I had to put a lot of hard work for that to happen. In fact, in the meantime I worked with a lot of musicians and became a music producer,” says Arijit, who will perform in Gurgaon’s Lemp Brewpub & Kitchen this Saturday.
Interestingly, Arijit produced the music for Cocktail's Tum Hi Ho Bandhu and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s Balam Pichkari and Kabira. He’s also assisted music directors such as Vishal-Shekhar, Pritam and Mithoon. “When I joined the music scene, a lot of big-ticket singers were not getting good work... It was a lean phase.
"I realised I don’t have a chance in the playback field, so I decided to diversify. I became a music producer and assisted music directors. But it was a blessing in disguise. That time helped me in becoming a better musician. And, these days all singers are trying to learn various aspects of music,” Arijit says.
Acting ambition
Raj Chakraborty called him into doing one music video for Bojhena Shey Bojhena. He did not want to do that. He didn't want to do all of that. He could see for himself that how uncomfortable he would look on screen..He is also featured in "Ghoom Paranir Gaan" from the film Proloy.
Playback Singing
Singh is a trained classical singer who has performed in many stage shows. His career as a playback singer started when he participated in a singing reality show called Fame Gurukul (2005), while still in college.[1][3] Although he did not win the competition, his participation garnered respect and love from fans. He went on to win a subsequent reality show called 10 ke 10 le gaye dil with the help of audience votes.[4] Shankar Ehsaan Loy gave Arijit the first break on one of their songs called "All For One" from High School Musical 2 (Vol 1) album. Moreover, he also sung the title song "Hum Hai Deewane" of the Indian TV show called Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon and "Dadagiri"(with Avishek Das) featuring Sourav Gangully. He has also sung the title track of Bengali television serial "Tomay Amay Mile" with Ujjaini Mukherjee. In the 2013 Bollywood blockbuster film Aashiqui 2, Tum Hi Ho received a lot of praise.
