Open Scalable File Systems, Inc. (OpenSFS) is a strong and growing nonprofit organization dedicated to the success of the Lustre file system. Since its inception, OpenSFS has been responsible for advancing Lustre and delivering new releases on behalf of the open source community. Through working groups, events, and ongoing funding initiatives, OpenSFS harnesses the power of collaborative development to fuel innovation and growth of Lustre worldwide.[1]
History
2010: OpenSFS was founded in 2010 with four founding "participants" (OpenSFS' term for paying members). The four Participants were Cray, DataDirect Networks, Livermore National Laboratory, and Oakridge National Laboratory. Currently, there are 19 active Participants.
2011: The Lustre community consolidated to align efforts to create a unified, global effort to support Lustre - creating OpenSFS. OpenSFS gathers community requirements and solicits proposals to then fund a 2-year development contract to improve Lustre metadata performance and scalability. OpenSFS is responsible for holding and sponsoring the Lustre User Group (LUG) every year.
2012: OpenSFS has been responsible for tree maintenance and scheduled releases for the community since 2012.
2013: As a continuance of the OpenSFS effort for Lustre, there is a request for proposals for Lustre feature development, parallel file system tools, addressing Lustre technical debt, and parallel file system incubators.[2]
OpenSFS has established the Lustre community portal for the entire Lustre open source community. This provides a collection of information in one area for reference and guidance.[3]
Goals
The end goal for OpenSFS is the continued evolution and success of the Lustre file system by ensuring it remains vendor-neutral, open, and free.[4]
Working Groups
Working groups for OpenSFS are specific groups of collaboration for people to contribute their expertise and ideas to the continued success of Lustre. Structured with specific group leaders, mailing list, and weekly scheduled teleconferences, helps keep the group organized and informed no matter their location.
Technical Working Group[5]
- Gather requirements from the community
- Propose and manage development projects
- Generate Lustre feature roadmap
Community Development Working Group[6]
- Manage Lustre releases
- Coordinate release roadmap for new features
- Coordinate community development
Benchmarking Working Group[7]
- Research I/O workloads in high performance parallel file systems configurations
- Investigate HPC user workloads
- Define tests to evaluate system performance
Wide Area File System Working Group[8]
- Coordinate use cases and features for wide area Lustre
Marketing Working Group
- Brand management: guide and direct use of OpenSFS brand footprint
- Event marketing: promote and exhibit opportunities for OpenSFS and its participants
Lustre User Group (LUG) and other Lustre events
LUG: An annual event for discussion and seminars on the Lustre parallel file system and other open source file system technologies provides more than 50 sessions and panels where attendees are able to immerse in the strong Lustre community, working collaboratively to further the development of Lustre.[9]
APAC LUG: The first annual APAC LUG event will be held in China, home of Tianhe-2, currently #1 on the TOP500, and the second event will be held in Japan, home of the K Computer, #1 in 2011. APAC Lustre User Group helps continue the global Lustre community and maintains the same mission as LUG by providing an event consisting of discussion and seminars to gather and share expertise and experience.
Supercomputing Conference (SC): An annual event brings together the international supercomputing community spotlighting the most advanced scientific and technical applications in the world, as well as providing a program of technical papers, tutorials and timely research posters.
