The Updata name was created in 1991 with the formation of Updata Software Ltd, which later became Updata Ltd., and is not connected with Updata Infrastructure UK Ltd., which was only created in 2003 using the same 'Updata' name.

Updata Infrastructure UK Ltd (Updata) (not to be confused with Updata Ltd, a London-based investment software firm) is a privately held UK company providing Internet and broadband connectivity services, primarily to public sector markets. Updata’s headquarters are in Premier House, Reigate, Surrey and the company also has office in Wales (Cefn Coed Business Park, Cardiff) and Scotland (Strathclyde Business Park, Bellshill).

In 2009/2010 Updata had revenues of £19.7m,[1] an increase of 82% on the previous year.

History

The history of the Updata name goes back to 1991 with the formation of Updata Software Ltd. by David Linton. [2] It is not connected in any way to the company Updata Infrastructure UK Limited, created in 2003 and which used the already established Updata name.

The history below is for Updata Infrastructure UK Ltd., not the original Updata Ltd.

Updata was founded in 2003 by Richard Bennett and Victor Baldorino, who remain the company’s Executive Directors.[3]

In 2009, Updata received investment from UK private equity firm LMS Capital plc.[4] Subsequently, in 2010, Tim Pearson, former CEO of RM plc, was appointed as Non-Executive Chairman.[5]

Activities

Updata initially focused on implementing local-loop unbundling in UK telephone exchanges, winning a number of contracts[6] Over time, the company has developed a broad range of Internet and broadband services, aimed primarily at public sector clients. The company operates both as a direct suppliers to public sector clients, and in partnership with larger IT services organisations such as Siemens, Logicalis and Fujitsu.

Updata’s Web site identifies a number of contracts with local authorities, education authorities and health service providers.

The company competes successfully for public sector business against major UK broadband suppliers. In 2010, Updata was awarded the contract to provide connectivity for the Hertfordshire Grid for Learning, displacing Virgin Media Business.[7] This contract is valued at £17.1m over six years.

Updata is listed on the UK Government Buying Solutions Framework RM374/L3 (Telecom Networks – Infrastructure and Connectivity).[8] This framework is for services in the areas of ‘multipoint connectivity & bandwidth for Wide-Area Networks (WANs) and Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), broadband infrastructure & access including Local Loop Unbundling (LLU), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).’
