This is an entirely provisional page for work/planning related to the proposed Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon at the Traverse Area District Library as part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries's Open Access Week 2013.

The theme, or focus, of editing will be on local history subjects (Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, and Northern Lower Michigan). But general editing of Wikipedia will also be encouraged and supported.

Exact date and location is yet to be determined, but it will likely be in mid/late October 2013.

Eventually some or all of this information will be moved to a proper meetup/edit-a-thon page.

Random but specific ideas

  • One thing that is particularly useful to Wikipedia/Wikimedia is the addition of images properly licensed for free use. If the focus is going to be on TC history, scanning pre-1923 images in the library's materials as well as soliciting images that community member's hold the rights to would be a useful sub-goal for the project. Looks like the Traverse City History Center has archival materials that might be suitable for upload to the Commons. We should discuss contacting them... Would serve the dual purpose of getting these materials into the Commons as well as a learning experience for the people doing the uploads, categorization, etc.
