Help:How to move a page

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Wbm1058 (talk | contribs) at 17:46, 1 July 2013 (Moving images and categories: images & categories have special procedures beyond the scope of a basic "How to" page. Cover these in the more detailed guide Wikipedia:Moving a page.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Pages can be renamed if the existing title is incorrect; this is called "moving" the page. To move pages, you need to be a logged-in user with an account that has been active for several days; log in or create an account first if necessary.

If you cannot move pages, you can request a page move instead. Do not try to move a page by creating a new page and copying the text from the old page, as this means that old versions of the page no longer show up in the page history.

Moving a page

To move a page:

  • Click the "move" link at the top of the page you would like to move.
    • Note: sometimes you can see this button only if you put your mouse over the drop-down arrow to the right of the "Edit" and "View history" buttons
    • If there is no "move" link at the top of the page at all, the page is most likely protected from moving, and only administrators can move it. You can ask for the page to be moved at the move request page.
  • Choose the appropriate name space prefix from the drop-down box. For pages in "main" Wikipedia space (i.e. articles), choose "(Article)".
  • Enter the new name of the page under "To new title". Give a reason for the move.
  • If the page has a discussion page, you will be asked if you want to move that as well; usually, you will.
  • Check to see if there are any interlanguage links. If you see an 'Edit links' link at the bottom of the list of links, update the Wikidata item associated with the page.

Moving the page will also create a redirect from the old title to the new title. If you are simply renaming the page, this ensures that links to the page continue to work.

Overwriting an existing page

You cannot rename a page to the same title as an existing page. Administrators can do this, but only by deleting the existing page first. Moving the existing page out of the way will not help, as it leaves behind a redirect which cannot be overwritten either. In such situations, ask for the pages to be moved at the move request page.

Categorizing redirects

When you move a page, this will create redirects. They should be categorized by the guide here.
