Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Springer. It is the official journal of The International Society of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. It covers all aspects of designing optimal structures in stressed systems as well as multidisciplinary optimization techniques when one of the disciplines deals with structures (stressed solids) or fluids. The journal’s scope ranges from the mathematical foundations of the field to algorithm and software development with benchmark studies to practical applications and case studies in structural, aero-space, mechanical, civil, chemical, and naval engineering. Closely related fields such as computer-aided design and manufacturing, reliability analysis, artificial intelligence, system identification and modeling, inverse processes, computer simulation, and active control of structures are covered when the topic is relevant to optimization. The editor in chief is George I. N. Rozvany (Budapest University of Technology and Economics).
International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization
The International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization was founded in October 1991. Its objectives are:
- to stimulate and promote research into all aspects of the optimal design of structures and related topics, including engineering systems consisting partially of structures and/or fluids;
- to encourage practical applications of optimization methods and the corresponding software development in all branches of technology;
- to foster the interchange of ideas amongst various fields contributing to structural and multidisciplinary optimization;
- to support the role of optimization in multidisciplinary design;
- to provide a framework for the organization of meetings and other means for the dissemination of knowledge on structural optimization; and
- to promote teaching of structural optimization in tertiary institutions.
Abstracting and indexing
The journal is abstracted and indexed in: Academic OneFile, Academic Search, Compendex, Current Contents/Engineering, Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition, Mathematical Reviews, Science Citation Index Expanded, and Scopus.
Issues related to article acceptance and publishing delays
The journal has recently seen a progressive drop in its ISI journal impact factor. After discussion with frequebnt contributors to the journal, this has been unofficially linked with :
- A relativeky long turn around time (TAT) linked with a general unwillingness of the traditional reviewers to take their reviewing activities seriously for the journal given the large number of articles received by the journal in view of the relatively low impact factor (1.488 in 2012).
- Frequent publishing delays observed, allegedly on account of the non-participation of the journal's chief editor Dr. G. I. N. Rozvany (last article published online: 10/05/2013 according to the journal's website accessed on 10/06/2013 at 4:00AM EST)
