In basketball, an old-fashioned three point play is achieved by scoring a two-point basket, being fouled in the process, and scoring one point on the free throw. It was the only way to score three points on a single possession before the three point shot was created in the 1960's for professional basketball and 1980's for collegiate basketball (see the History of the three-pointer). Various other names for it have arisen throughout the years such as an "And-1" and simply a "three-point play". Hence the term commonly used among NBA analysts "a three point play the old-fashioned way." [1][2]
