Hidalgo
Appearance
Hidalgo (nobility) (Fidalgo in Galician and Portuguese) is a traditional title of persons of the Spanish nobility or gentry. The word is a contraction of the phrases 'hijo de algo', literally "a son of something." Despite this informal-sounding term, the Spanish court rigorously regulated who was and who was not entitled to call himself an hidalgo. By extension the word is also used in Spanish for a person of noble and generous spirit (gentleman).
