Area code 417 serves the southwestern quadrant of Missouri, including the cities of Branson, Carl Junction, Carthage, Joplin, Lebanon, Neosho, Nixa, Ozark, Springfield, and West Plains.

Missouri was originally slated to receive only two area codes – 314 for eastern Missouri (including St. Louis), and 816 for western Missouri, including Kansas City; however, when area codes began use in 1951, southwestern Missouri was assigned 417. which is the only one of Missouri's original area codes that still has its original boundaries, and among the decreasing number of original area codes (not counting those covering an entire state) that has never been split or overlaid. There are no short-term plans to provide a second area code for southwest Missouri; under current projections, the region will not need another area code until 2032 at the earliest. Despite the growing proliferation of cell phones and pagers (particularly in and around Springfield), 417 is nowhere near exhaustion.[1]
