SEAL Team SIX is the U.S. Navy's counterterrorist unit. Richard Marcinko, a Commander who was a SEAL in the Vietnam war, created the unit as part of the Joint Special Operations Command in 1980. It became operational in 1981. However, the unit was later given the cover name of Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

Since its founding, SEAL Team SIX has conducted many operations, only a few of which have been acknowledged by the Governement. These include the rescuing of deposed, legal rulers, such as Scoones in Grenada and Airistride in Haiti. They have also launched opperations against terrorists, although few of these have been heard about. Four SEAL Team SIX operators were present at the battle for Mogadishu.
