Comodo SSL is a product of the Comodo Group's certificate authority (CA). Comodo is the second-largest issuer of business-validated certificates. An SSL Certificate is required to use the Secured Socket Layer protocol, which creates a secure and encrypted connection on the internet.

[1] Comodo's certificate profile includes Organization Validation (OV) certificates, Domain Validation (DV) certificates, Extended Validation Certificate (EV SSL) certificates,[2] Multi-Domain certificates, Unified Communications certificates,[3][4] email certificates and code signing certificates. Comodo CA undergoes an annual WebTrust audit by Ernst & Young.[5]

Role in Creating the EV SSL Certificate

Comodo is credited with originating the Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificate. EV SSL Certicates are issued only after criteria are met that require extensive verification of the requesting entity's identity by the certificate authority (CA).

In 2005 Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO of the Comodo Group, convened the first meeting of the organization that became the CA/Browser Forum, hoping to improve standards for issuing SSL certificates.[6] On June 12, 2007, the CA/Browser Forum officially ratified the first version of the Extended Validation (EV) SSL Guidelines, which took effect immediately.

Comodo SSL Market Share

Comodo is the second largest issue of SSL certificates, and the largest privately held. A W3Techs survey from November 2012 shows:
