It was founded in 1963 and is one of 80 institutes in the Max Planck Society (Max Planck Gesellschaft). The Institute has four main research areas: Adaptive Behavior and Cognition (headed by Gerd Gigerenzer), Adaptive Rationality (headed by Ralph Hertwig), Lifespan Psychology (headed by Ulman Lindenberger) and History of Emotions (headed by Ute Frevert).
