Length of opening section

Broken up the opening section (but still needs to introduce cross linking with other wikipedia articles), the next sections need some work, they jump straight to levels without introducing them. What paragraph does trigger the advertisement notice? Egrange (talk) 08:48, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Improving the opening section

Can I suggest the opening section's goal is to introduce the topic to a general audience, with relatively jargon free language? To "manage manufacturing operations" is not really much help. I'd like to know the function of the MES, as understood by it's operator, but in the language that the factory HR manager could easily understand.

Can I suggest considering inclusion of some mix of the following? Perhaps:

"work-in-process on a factory floor."
"MES keeps track of all manufacturing information in real time, receiving up-to-the-minute data from robots, machine monitors and employees." Techtarget
balancing scarce resources to create products and value for customers
