NVGRE (Network Virtualization using Generic Routing Encapsulation) is a network protocol that uses Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) to tunnel layer 2 packets over layer 3 networks. It is intended to solve the same network scaling problems as VXLAN. Its principal backer is Microsoft.[1]
