Fast Duplicate File Finder is a freeware Windows tool developed by MindGems Inc. It is intended to scan a user's computer for duplicate files, display a list of such files and let the user delete unneeded copies with the purpose of freeing up hard drive space. It is compatible with all Microsoft Windows versions including the latest Windows 8, Windows 7 and all Windows Server operating systems and their corresponding 32 and 64 bit versions.
Independent Tests
The product receives quite some positive reviews on many reputable web sites. PCWorld.com, as of Mar 2, 2011, gives the product a very positive review: "Fast Duplicate File Finder is simple to use, goes about its work quickly, and it's free. It's this simple: If you're looking to trim your hard disk by deleting duplicate files, it won't lead you wrong." [1]
A review at Overclocker.com concludes - "Overall this is absolutely worth taking the minimal time to download and see how “duped” your files are – you could be in for a shock! There is a Tutorial worth reading, even though using it is about as simple as it gets." [2]
CNET Editors mention that the feature for finding similar files is slower, but it is useful for finding resized and lower-quality copies. The final conclusion of their review reads "The Free version of this program disables some of the Pro version's features, such as the Filters button, and limits some of its capabilities. It did a good job of finding duplicates, though, which is all we were hoping for."[3]
Softonic's review points as disadvantage the fact that the "Auto-check" is a bit confusing. As positive sides of the tool are pointed the facts that it is fast, easy to use and provides a built-in preview.[4]
