Caolan Lavery (born 22 October 1992) is a football player born in Canada. He began his youth career in Canada and in 2012 he joined the Sheffield Wednesday Development Squad after being at several youth and reserve teams before this.[1] He is currently on loan at Southend United.

Career

In Canada, Lavery played for the Red Deer Renegades, he had trials with Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic, while playing for Northern Ireland youth side Goodyear F.C. Finally after a successful trial at Ipswich Town he moved there.[2] Lavery rejected the offer of a new deal at Ipswich in late 2011. He left the club after his academy scholarship expired, he went on to have trials at Sunderland and Leicester City in November.[3][4] In December 2011 Lavery was reported to be in talks with League Two club Bradford City.[5] The following January he was reported to be in talks with Scottish Premier League club Kilmarnock.[6] But finally in the summer of 2012 Lavery did sign for a club, this was Sheffield Wednesday in order to become apart of their Development Squad.[1] On the 28 August 2012, Lavery was included in Sheffield Wednesday's first-team squad for the League Cup tie against Premier League Fulham. Lavery however didn't make his first professional career appearance as he was an unused substitute.[7] A 1–0 win saw Sheffield Wednesday enter Round 3 of the competition, and they played Premier League outfit Southampton. Lavery also made the bench for the game, but with the Owls trailing by a goal, more senior and experienced substitutes were used instead, with Joe Mattock, Jermaine Johnson, and Chris O'Grady coming on.[8]

International Career

Lavery is elgible to play for his country of birth Canada. And, as both his parents were born there, either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. Before Lavery's move to England he played for Canada U-17 in warm-up games in preparation to qualifiers for the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup.[2] However, after playing time in Northern Ireland for Goodyear and then his move to Ipswich Town, he switched to the Northern Ireland national side. He made his debut for Northern Ireland U-21's on 15 November 2011 in a 2-0 loss against Serbia. He has also made three appearances for the Northern Ireland U-19's.[9]
