The flashed face distortion effect is an optical illusion involving the fast-paced presentation of eye-aligned faces.[1] Faces appear grotesquely transformed whilst one focuses on the cross midway between them.[2] As with many scientific discoveries, the phenomenon was discovered by accident. The effect has been applied to Hollywood celebrities, [3] and won 2nd Place in the Best Illusion of the Year Contest [4] in 2012.
