Colin Robbins is a chartered director and a software engineer credited for research work in distributed directory systems. He holds a BSc, Computer Science & Electronic Engineering, with first class honours[citation needed], from University College London.

Robbins developed the Quipu / X.500 elements of the ISO Development Environment (ISODE), and went on to become the custodian of the open source software ISODE platform. He wrote part 3 of the book Implementing X.400 and X.500: the PP and QUIPU Systems [1], and was a significant contributor[clarification needed] to The Little Black Book: Mail Bonding with OSI Directory Services[2]. This work led to the invention of LDAP - partly documented in the following two LDAP RFCs 1448 [3] and 1778[4] published by the IETF. Robbins led the Electronic Messaging Association's world directory challenge[5] and the Europe-wide Nameflow Paradise project,[6] demonstrating the application of distributed directory systems. Other work on distributed directories has been published[7][8].

Professionally, Robbins is chartered by the Institute of Directors[9], serving of the Boards of Nexor and the Information Assurance Advisory Council (IAAC)[10][failed verification]. He is co-chair of the Information Assurance Collaboration Group (IACG).

He is also a fully qualified water polo coach, on the UK Amateur Swimming Association's Advanced Coaching Programme[11]
