The Sequence Read Archive or Short Read Archive is a bioinformatics database that provides a public repository for DNA sequencing data, especially the "short reads" generated by High-throughput sequencing, which are typically less than 1000 base pairs in length.
The archive is part of the European Nucleotide Archive, and run as a collaboration between the European Bioinformatics Institute, the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and the DNA Data Bank of Japan.
NCBI announced their plan to close the NCBI mirror of the SRA archive in February 2011 due to funding constraints. In October 2011, NCBI announced it planned to continue with the SRA archive.[1]
Deposition of data in the SRA is a mandatory requirement of some funding agencies and open access journals.
