LARMOR neutron microscope

The LARMOR neutron microscope is a planned microscope based on the principle of neutron scattering. It is named in honor of Joseph Larmor and the principle of larmor precession which he described and which will be used in the LARMOR microscope to increase resolution and accuracy.[1] It will be built at the ISIS facilities in Oxfordshire.[1][2]

Description

LARMOR will be a neutron scattering instrument which will be used to make high-precision, deep images of physical objects.[1][3][4] Since neutrons bear no electrical charge, neutron beams can penetrate deeply into materials. By examining the few interactions that neutrons do have with atoms they encounter and enhancing the imaging using larmor precession, the development team for the microscope expects to be able to create images with a resolution at the individual atom level.[1][3] The microscope allow for observation of magnetic materials, complex liquids and living biological specimen.[1] An example of application of this research is the improvement of electronics and the storage of charge in lithium-ion batteries.[5]

LARMOR is a joint project of the Delft University of Technology, the Eindhoven University of Technology, the University of Groningen and the Science and Technology Facilities Councils ISIS neutron source.[1][2] It will be funded jointly by the participating Dutch universities and ISIS, and the Dutch NWO will contribute 2.3 million Euro.[1][4] As a result, one-third of the microscope's time will be reserved for research from the Netherlands.[1]
