Overlay architure is a phrase that has been invented as self promotion for a company 'Team Populous' in order to redefine a process that has happened since Ancient Greek times and relates to the temporary elements that supplement existing buildings and infrastructure to enable the operation of major sporting events or festivals. These elements provide additional facilities for the duration of an event and are generally of a lightweight construction, as they are often removed afterwards.

Overlay is defined in Chambers English dictionary as "overlay verb 1 to lay one thing on or over another. 2 (often overlay one thing with another) a to cover or conceal it with something else; b to cover (a surface) with an applied decoration. 3 printing to obtain the correct printing pressure evenly over (a forme or plate) by adding to the appropriate areas of the packing. noun 1 a covering; something that is laid over something else. 2 a layer, e.g. of gold leaf, applied to something for decoration. 3 a transparent sheet placed over a map or diagram, etc. to give additional information or details. 4 printing material used to overlay a forme or plate. 5 computing a the process by which segments of a large program are brought from backing store for processing, with only those segments currently requiring processing being held in the main store; b a segment of a program transferred in this way."
