An Electronically-controlled Unit Injector (EUI) is a Unit injector which performs the same function in an internal combustion engine, such as in a diesel-electric locomotive, and is camshaft driven as to its pressurized delivery of fuel to the cylinder, as was a conventional Unit injector, but which is controlled by the engine control unit as to its "fill" and "dump" operations so as to achieve these advantages:

  • Minimum emissions, possibly at the expense of slightly increased fuel consumption
  • Minimum fuel consumption, possibly at the expense of slightly increased emissions

Central to the EUI is the built-in pump, which, as before EUI, allows for low-pressure fuel delivery and return to all injectors, yet provides exceptionally high pressure and concomitant injection and atomization of the fuel to the cylinder during the engine's power cycle.

This system is employed primarily on Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) locomotive, marine and stationary engines, and primarily on the EMD 710 family of diesel engines.
