FindTheBest is a comparison engine designed to present products and services in a side-by-side format. The site was founded in 2010 by Kevin O'Connor, former CEO and co-founder of DoubleClick, and Scott Leonard.[2]
Overview
FindTheBest is organized into nine categories including: Business, Education, Electronics, Health, Home & Family, Motors, Software, Sports & Rec and Travel & Lifestyle.[3][4] Products and services are presented in a search results page (SRP) similar to Kayak.com's flight finding platform.[2][5]
FindTheBest allows users to find and compare options for considered purchases by using tools like sortable categories, filters and smart ratings.[6][7] The site uses proprietary technology and human curation to aggregate the data used for its comparisons.[8]
Users can add or edit listings, but all changes must be approved by the site before they are published.[9]
FindTheBest operates on a "LAMP" foundation; Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.[10]
History
FindTheBest was founded in Santa Barbara, California in May 2009, and was made available to the public in August 2010 following a two-year and two million dollar investment.[7][10]
In December 2010, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers invested $2M into FindTheBest; in July 2011, Kleiner Perkins invested another $4M in Series A funding.[11]
The site redesigned their user interface in December 2011.[10]
By January 2012, approximately 20% of the website's traffic was coming from mobile.[12]
In February 2012, the site launched the "AssistMe" feature on 20 comparisons to help return personalized recommendations. AssistMe uses an algorithm to calculate product results based on a user's weighing of the product's aspects.[13]
The site reached 10 million unique visitors a month in July of 2012. Partnerships with publishers such as Conde Nast, AOL, Bonnier and Rodale are partly responsible for FindTheBest's increase in traffic. [14]
