Nutter

A nutter (or nut gatherer) is one who gathers nuts. It is also a slang word for a mentally ill person, but also slang for someone who is fearless, tough and cruel. Term 'Nutter' comes from Alice Nutter who was hanged as one of a group of witches in Pendleton, England in1692. Alice Nutter was unusual among the Nutters as she was the wealthy widow of a farmer and kept silent throughout her trial except to enter a plea of not guilty to the murder of Henry Mitton by witchcraft.

She was later hanged after a statement by a nine-year-old witness, Jennet Device, stated she had been present at witches' coven meeting at Malkin Tower meeting on Good Friday, 1612.
