The Ident protocol is an old identification server system still used on most IRC networks today. A popular ident daemon is identd. Many consider the Ident service to be useless and unsafe to keep running. While the Ident port (113) can be hard to set to 'stealth' or 'filtered' mode with some hardware firewalls, many have gotten around this by forwarding all requests to an arbitrary, non-existant IP address within their network.
