North American area code 520 is a state of Arizona telephone area code created in a split from area code 602 on March 19, 1995. The 602 code remained in the Phoenix metropolitan area, while 520 was used elsewhere in Arizona. 520 itself was split on June 23, 2001, creating area code 928, due to population gains in Tucson, Yuma, and Flagstaff. (928 was only the third North American area code not using 0 or 1 as its middle digit.) The counties of Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, and most of Pinal, kept 520, while Yuma and La Paz counties, western Maricopa County, and northern Arizona, were switched to 928.
