This section is set up to support rendered-to-rendered copying into edit summaries. While keeping this page open (e.i., rendered) while editing another, just copy all between the > and the < marks, then paste into the other page's edit summary.

Link rot prevention: Archives, permalinks, etc.

• Link rot: The hub article. Covers prevention, mitigation, repair, alternative citation method when only substantiating or footnoting a quote. "Avoid bare URLs," says the article, in bold text.
• Using the Wayback Machine: Best used for archiving Web pages or graphics/illustrations that need to be frozen in time. Search first, using the FF Bookmarks ≥ Bookmarklets ≥ Wayback search/lookup or the FF extension 404 Error. Permalink text is returned from either a search hit or the creation transaction. Verify copyright/licensing before creating.

Do not use the WBM for copying presently unarchived works on the Web into the Universal Library of IA (account required, and there are licensing, copyright, and metatdata issues to consider). WebCite is the best method for CC- or GPL-licensed works and Wikisource is the best home for public domain works..

• Using WebCite: Creates both a permalink and an archive. Best used for storing Web-accessible works into the Internet Archive's (IA) Universal Library and for Web pages that are not already stored at the Wayback Machine. Citation text returned to the browser upon creation and also via e-mail. Use FF Bookmarks ≥ Bookmarklets ≥ webcite@snapshot+cite.

  For works verifiably in the public domain (e.g., publications of the U.S. government), upload to WS, instead of to IA.

Redirects

• Redirect: The hub article. Help:Redirect relates more to the how-to aspects and markup handling.
• Hatnotes: Hub article, supports disambiguations and non-obvious redirects in the target of a redirection page.

National varieties of English

• Wikipedia:Name#National_varieties_of_English: Hub article for article naming. A reason for creating redirect pages when an article title contains words spelled differently in different national varieties (e.g., analyzer vs. analyser.).
• WP:ENGVAR: Policies: (a) Stay with the original variety. (b) Don't change into another variety. Variety differences are not misspellings.
• Useful alert template(s) for later editors (use after reverting/reversing the improper edits):
  • Templates like {{British English editnotice}} (other English variants are listed on that template's doc page) can't be added to article /Talk pages by ordinary editors. Not an option.
  • Consider putting the {{uw-lang}} template on the violating user's /Talk page to advise of these guidelines.

This substitutes the text of the warning. Parameters: Article-title is the page-link of the specific article that the user improperly edited, and the optional Additional text, such as "The original-language text in this article has now been restored", explains what was done.
